Flowers for Algernon
Flowers
for Algernon is a
science fiction short story and a novel by
American writer Daniel Keyes that explores questions about intellect and
happiness.
This
book caught my interest as it makes you think of human life,
feelings and behavior. The second thing is the
style of writing, it’s very enjoying to watch the “evolution” of the
character’s words and grammar.
When I first saw the book cover, I thought that Algernon is a man's name, but it turned out to be mouse's name!
Speaking about the issues, one of the most important things is bullying. This
book shows the relationship between intelligent and unintelligent people, or more
generally, between the powerful and the weak. The main character's (Charlie) coworkers subject him to a series of cruel pranks and jokes
that reinforce Charlie’s stupidity, clumsiness, and gullibility. By teasing him,
they think they’re smarter. But after Charlie becomes a genius,
coworkers admit
that they’re ignoring him because they don’t want a reminder of their own
mental inferiority: they don’t want to be around someone who makes them feel
stupid. So, the issue is described with the great examples of cruelty.
“Flowers for Algernon” – is one
of the most fascinating books I’ve ever read. It could be interesting for the peers as, at first, the language is easy, but
then it consists of more sophisticated words and constructions; the style is
rather unusual as it’s diary form. I find reading it easy because it’s read in
a heartbeat.

Hello Nastya,
ОтветитьУдалитьthanks for sharing this book review with us. It's clear from it that you indeed liked the book. What is not at all clear whether you have used any information from the reviews of this book, have you? And if yes, you should have provided the reference details.
Points to consider:
“Flowers for Algernon” – is one of the most fascinating books I’ve ever read: I think you have added the "dash" here automatically based on the Russian pattern of such sentences where the dash is used. In English there should be a link verb, and you have it.
